Description

The border of a shawl on a cream silk ground. In the deep border at the end, fern like foliage, in the ends of gigantic elongated cones, grows through Gothic windows and arches. In the narrow border at the end, the lower sections of these cones alternate with roundels, resembling window lights. At the corner of this narrow border is a Chinese pot, square in shape, from which a plant with large, feathery flowers grows along the narrow side border. Colours include cream, red, lime green, dark grey-ish blue, white, pale lilac-pink, bound with creamy yellow silk in the field, purple silk in the border and sage green silk in the outer guard stripe, giving different colours on the surface. The white and blue are cotton, other wefts are wool. Shawl end of woven silk, wool and cotton, French, designed by Herault and Léon, woven by Bournhonet, Paris, 1839
