Description

The opulence and expense of the materials and labor that went into the making of this chasuble, stole and maniple provide evidence for the importance of vestments to the religious practices of the time. Although its general condition is poor, this early-18th century example still evokes a sense of awe with its workmanship and overall beauty. The painted area within the shield at the lower back of the chasuble of a figure in flames may depict a soul or saint in purgatory or "purgatorius ignis" (purifying fire).
