Description

Shawl woven with a silk warp, a woollen ground weft and cotton wefts, made by Charles Burgess, Paisley, Scotland, ca. 1845 Square shawl woven with a silk warp, a woollen ground weft and cotton wefts in 3/1 twill. Red central field with a cone in each corner. Border around the shawl with interlaced cones with floral decoration and a further outer border of interlacing floral motifs. The outer border is contained within narrow borders which have claret coloured grounds. The selvedges are green. Main colours of blue, claret, yellow, green and pink on a red ground. Silk warp fringe at each end and a plain strip of twill in sections claret, green, yellow, red and blue. Yellow weft of silk. The wefts are cut away on the back of the shawl.
