Description

Man’s waistcoat with a round neckline, curving fronts and skirts reaching to the top of the thigh. Each front has a pocket and pointed pocket flap. The fronts, back skirts and pocket flaps are made of pale green silk twill, the back of pale green worsted twill. The waistcoat and pockets are lined with linen; the skirt and pocket-flap linings and front facings are ivory silk twill. A silver-gilt thread cord edges the pocket flaps, necks, fronts and hems. There are 12 worked buttonholes along the left front with 12 buttons covered with silver-gilt thread on the right front and 3 below each pocket. The waistcoat was altered for size, probably during the lifetime of the wearer; insertions of olive-green worsted were made in the side seams. Man's waistcoat, 1770s, British; pale green silk twill, silver-gilt cord trim
