Description

Shawl of woven wool and silk, Great Britain, ca. 1815-1840 Shawl of woven wool and silk. With an all over design of large and small medallions in bright blue, pale green, yellow, black and white wool on a pink silk ground. 1/3 warp twill ground and pattern bound in 3/1 twill. The borders attached to the shawl were not woven as part of it and from their colour may not have been intended for this shawl. 3.19 inches wide, contained and divided by narrow stripes of red and yellow barber-pole, are two border stripes: one is a floral meander in vermilion, blue, grey-blue and yellow wool on a white silk ground, and the other has floral motifs in grey-blue, blue, yellow and white on a red chain on a dark blue background. 2/1 twill ground and pattern bound in 2/1 twill.
