Description

F, 1750-70, British; Pale green silk satin, quilted with flowers and swags, altered 1870-1910 Woman's petticoat of pale green silk taffeta lined with glazed undyed wool and wadded with a thin layer of wool. It is quilted in running stitch with pale green silk thread in a border of geometric shapes with vertical flowers above, around the hem. Above are 5 tiers of swags with very abstract flowers suspended. The petticoat is made of 7 panels of silk, with pocket openings in the side seams. The hem is bound with ⅝-inch (1.6 cm) wide pale green silk ribbon. The petticoat was altered in the late 19th century, probably for a studio prop. The original waist binding and ties were remove, the waist pleating reconfigured and stitched with linen tape.
