Description

Man's waistcoat, 1770s, British; Carnation pink silk trimmed narrow silver braid A man's waistcoat made of carnation pink silk taffeta with a round neck, curving fronts and skirts reaching between mid and top of the thigh. Each front has a pocket and shaped pocket flap. The front edges, hem, pockets and pocket flaps are edged with a woven lace (braid) of white silk and silver thread. Both the fronts and back are made of the silk; the waistcoat is lined with bleached fustian; the fronts faced and skirts lined with white silk taffeta. There are 12 buttonholes worked with silver thread and strip along the left front of the waistcoat and there were 13 silver passementerie buttons on the right front (1 at the top now missing), and 3 below each pocket.
