Description

embroidered, 1800s, Persian; Whitework Plain weave cotton embroidered with silk in straight stitches, needleweaving and pulled thread work; whitework; bound with block printed cotton. The central are is left mainly undecorated except for two small diagonal corner units at the lower end which are patterned with a ground of needleweaving and multi-petalled flowerheads. At the top a pulled thread section with a needlewoven rectangle, of joined stars, edged with rows of tiny hexagons in the shape of lozenges [a]. On the two short sides of the rectangle a triangular section repeats the patterning of the lower end. A band of needleweaving of [a] on a large scale frames the whole rectangle and is finished wither side with a tiny reciprocal trefoil border in straight stitch. Cotton thread: Z-spun Embroidery Thread: white silk; 2S Binding: a narrow block printed cotton binding has been applied around all foru sides. White ground with an incomplete pattern of small flowerheads in blue or red and pink.
