Description

Found in Egypt, design reflects late Hellenistic style. Rectangular panel: Pan and Bacchus. Warp: (crossing panel horizontally) light bluish-green wool (S twist) 9-10 to cm. Weft: polychrome wool (Z twist). Design: Pan and Bacchus stand side by side, the hand of Baccus on Pan's shoulder, on dark blue ground on which attributes are scattered (pipes, clappers, wine cup, garland). Goat skin between figures. Flesh tones woven with several shades of rose, cream, and pale brown; hair, features, accents and outlines, brown and light blue. Border: contiguous petals woven with several shades of rose, cream, brown and blue, on dark blue bordered with cream, and traces of light blue outer edge. Condition fragmentary, many holes.
