The double-headed eagle became the primary symbol of the state during the late Byzantine centuries and was also adopted for liturgical use. This huge eagle was probably used as an altar cloth or as a podea, a skirt hung beneath an icon. The inscription, which connects the owner with distinguished imperial dynasties, exaggerated the claims of a pretender to the patriarchal throne.

Fragment de teixit que correspon a una part de la peça que es conserva al Smithsonia Cooper-Hewit, National Design Museum (New York) amb el núm. de registre 1902-1-221-a/b. La peça del Cooper prové de la donació de Mr. Pierpont Morgan qui la va adquirir al col•leccionista català Miquel i Badia l’any 1901. Dos fragments més es troben a la col·lecció MTIB, actual Museu del Disseny, ref. 32.930 que provenen de la col·lecció Pascó.
Tenim una reinterpretació del teixit sencer en paper amb el n.reg.06160(2).
