Sash made of yellow thread interwoven with gold. Fringe at one end. This gold sash was described as worn by nurses, when it was acquired in 1867. If so, it would only have been on special occasions. The bright colour which it still retains is due to the pure gold sheet wrapped around the weft threads. It would always have been an expensive and luxurious object. It was bought for £1 8s. as part of the Castellani collection of Italian Peasant Jewellery at the International Exhibition, Paris, 1867. Sash of cloth of gold, with gold fringe, Italy, 19th century.
