Description

Man's waistcoat with a 1¾-inch (4.5 cm) standing collar, revers, straight fronts and hems, hip length. There are no pockets, only a pocket welt sewn to each front. The fronts, collar, pocket welts and revers are made of cream ribbed poplin (silk warp and cotton weft) with a narrow horizontal stripe of silver strip. The waistcoat fronts are lined with cream worsted and faced with the cream poplin. A 5/16-inch (8 mm) white silk braid figured with silver strip is applied to the collar, revers, pocket welts, front edges and hems. It has a double-breasted effect with 10 buttons (top 1 missing) covered with fabric matching the applied braid set back from 11 worked buttonholes along the left front, with 11 covered buttons set back from the right front edge. The waistcoat was altered in the 19th century, probably as a studio prop; the back was replaced and 4 buttonholes on the right front edge cut and stitched. Man's waistcoat, 1790s, British; cream ribbed poplin with a silver stripe, altered 1870-1910
