Sampler with verse "On religion..." with alphabet and floral borders worked in cross, satin, stem, and buttonhole stitches and inscribed "Honor How, March 15, 1838, Cutcombe School."

Darning or running stitch sampler. Across the top are the alphabet and the numbers 1-10. Beneath this are rows of rectangular bands having geometric and linear motives, some intersecting at right angles to form crosses. A narrow band runs horizontally across the field with the inscription "M*ADRIANBNSSBNS*1838*DBN---" Border on two sides of a simple leafy vine. Slightly soiled and stained.  Stitches: cross, pattern darning, simple darning.

Near the top a script alphabet. Beneath this are four rows with various naturalistic floral architectural, animal and religious motives. Beneath this is a wreath with the initials "PPW" and the date. Surrounding this are more motives similar to these above and two smaller wreath with initials. Some stains. White cotton backing.   Stitches: cross.
