Description

Portion of a darbar carpet woven in woollen pile, cotton and silk, Lahore, ca. 1650. Portion of a darbar carpet woven in coloured woollen pile upon white cotton warps, and crossed by a triple weft made of one red silk shoot between two red cotton shoots. The borders are missing, and the pattern of the field is composed of horizontal rows of Ming vases containing plants bearing poppies, irises, roses, tulips and other flowers on a kermes-red ground within strapwork lobed compartments in white and green. The white cotton 8-ply warps number 31 to the inch. The triple weft of one silk thread between two salmon-coloured two-fold threads of cotton runs between the rows of Persian knots, which number about 260 to the square inch. The colours are red, white, blue, crimson, ochre, yellow and purple.
