Its vibrant colour and the classical motifs - the wreath and lyre - are both typical of Empire style. The design is such that the silk could be used either for hangings or for upholstery. The patterns, in the fashionable Neo-classical style, are similar to ones produced by the firm of Camille Pernon of Lyon for the rooms of the Emperor Napoleon I in the Palace of Fontainbleau.
