Description

Tapestry woven in wool and silk on a woollen warp, Mortlake Tapestry Factory, England, 1660-1699 Tapestry woven in wool and silk on a woollen warp, about 18 threads to an inch. Depicting haymaking in July. In the foreground is a man with a scythe and behind him a man is drinking from a jar. Behind them are other figures working in the field, raking hay and loading it onto a cart. One man is asleep against a haystack. On the left is a cow. Behind trees in the background is a village and in the front is a stream with a lock. The border contains a curling wine leaf in brown and green-yellow on a slate coloured ground. In the top border is woven a sign of the zodiac 'Leo'.
