Description

Heavy brown linen embroidered with various shades of light blue, green, light neutral brown, yellow and cream silk. A symbolic representation of the Crucifixion. The cross rises from a mountain of rocks above a skull representing Adam, and is surmounted by a figure of the God-head: Mary and John Stand on either side. Six small angels hover about, one holding a chalice to catch the blood of Christ. A small naked figure with arms outstretched represents possibly the soul of man. The sun and moon appear above. On the transverse beams and on the two panels above, is an inscription in Armenian characters, reading, Jesus Nazareth king Jesus: Crucifixion: Forgiveness: Lord God Jesus Christ. Much worn. Said to be Armenian.
