Description

Middle East, Textile; Silk panel, twill figure on satin ground, design of figures on red ground, thought to commemorate Safavid Shah Tahmasp's campaign against the Georgians, specifically the raid against the city of Kartlia in 1553, Iran, 1550-1600 Silk tissue, woven in pale green, yellow, white and black silks on a crimson satin ground. A portion of a pattern is repeated in rows between trees, representing a captive woman being led by a warrior who carries an axe over his shoulder; the remainder of the ground is filled with flowering stems. Colours: green, yellow, white, black, crimson.
