Description

Panel of silk which has a white ground with a zig-zag meander of fruit and flowers. The pattern is brocaded in coloured silks with alternative comber repeats of blue and pink flowers and fruit. The colouring is subdued; the blue repeat having dark green leaves shaded in black, whereas the pink repeat has soft olive green leaves highlighted with a pale, creamy green. The white ground is woven in tabby with an additional warp forming a flush chevron pattern. The panel retains the left selvedge, which is narrow, self-coloured and has seven cords. This piece has been sewn as a panel between an orange damask silk, the seams of which remain. Silk panel, France, 1730-1765.
