Description

Two and ¾ panels a woman’s petticoat of white silk satin, lined with undyed glazed worsted wadded with a layer of blue wool. It is quilted in running stitch with white silk thread in a horizontal pattern of leaves and scrolls at the hem below swags with zig-zags, tassels and flowers, and a pattern of angled curves above. The panels appear to have never been made into a petticoat. The lining is untrimmed at the waist and there are no folds for shaping. The selvedge at the right edge would have been the centre back. The stitching of on the left of this panel stops below the waist to accommodate a pocket opening. Panels from a woman's petticoat, 1750-70, British; White silk satin, quilted with swags, tassels, flowers
