Description

Dress panel made of corded silk covered with net, embroidered with beads, Great Britain, ca. 1895 Dress panel made of dark pink corded silk covered with black machine-made net, embroidered with circular and bugle shaped beads of black jet. The panel comes from the skirt of an evening dress and tapers from the top. The side seam edges are raw, and the net is tacked to the silk background along the side edges with black tacking stitches. The scalloped hem edge is lined with dark pink silk. The beads are embroidered in a formal design of stylised artichokes and palmettes with elongated pods or flower buds issuing from twirling branches. There is an additional border decoration at the hem comprising a line of larger faceted jet spangles with beads embroidered into five large droplets which border a scalloped hemline.
