Description

Textile fragment of brocaded silk satin in silver threads, France, 1700-1710 Textile fragment of woven silk satin with a design of an elaborate silver ewer containing several large flowers in silver, blue, yellow and green. Some of the flowers are trailing from the ewer. Tissue with a satin of 5 ground, and the pattern bound in 4/1 twill by a proportion of the ground warp threads 1 in 4. Warp of S thrown crimson silk, decoupure 7, ca. 148 warp threads to cm. 550-560 cords in the design. Alternate ground wefts of white and yellow, and the other colours and the silver threads are brocaded. The silver thread is a S wound silver strip on a white silk core. On the right hand side is a selvedge consisting of 5 cordonnets woven in tabby with the yellow and white ground wefts.
