Bodice; silk and gold ribbon; Delhi, c.1855; Women's clothes The edges of this diaphanous blouse are decorated with a lavish edging strip of crimped gold ribbon (gota), a fringe of alternating gold and silver tinsel and tiny beads sewn onto silk strips in floral and leaf patterns. The elaborate embroidery of this edging is particularly remarkable in comparison with the incredibly delicate green silk ground fabric, which has perished in many places, partly because of the weight of the embroidered borders.
