Description

Textile of brocaded silk satin with an elaborate design of floral motifs in coloured silks, gold and silver threads, and a silver meander with a lacy edging in red silk. There are several decorative patterns in gold thread on the background and with a satin ground. The repeat of the design is 22.5 inches long and it is not complete in the width. There is a selvedge on the left hand side. Tissue with a satin ground, and the pattern is bound in 3 and 1 twill. The twill binds the gold and silver thread in opposite directions emphasising the contrasting surface. Four kinds of metal thread are used: silver filé and frisé and gold filé and frisé. All the coloured silks are brocaded except the green outlining the flowers. The ground warp and weft are of cream silk. Five outer cordonnets, woven in tabby with a white ground and the green weft used together. Three inner stripes woven in green and white satin.
