Darning or running stitch sampler. White linen ground with polychrome silk yarns. Central square compartment with a cross-like motif in the center. At each outer corner of the compartment is a stylized floral motif. Flanking this area the initials "MK" and "AB". Surrounding this are several similar cross motives in geometric and linear patterns. A crown repeats in the upper right and lower left corners, the former above the initials "CN", the latter above "Oud 16"(Age 16). The date appears below the central compartment.

Complete wall panel woven after designer produced for the Cabinet des Parades for the Palais du Pardo outside of Madrid. Cream-colored satin ground brocaded and embroidered with polychrome silks. Design, top to bottom: three butterflies within a square formed of fliage and pink blossoms; rose sprigs and festoon; parrot (embroidered); blue vase holding asters; pair of affronted pheasants; bird-cage (embroidered); ribbon festoons and blue cornflower sprigs; a golden mask with red-and-gold festoon. Yellow-and-blue striped and white corded selvedges, complete on both sides. Six blue stamps on back. Small breaks in satin near selvedges at center and ends. Few small brown stains.

In this highly moralizing allegory, the young woman's hair is styled modishly à la Titus, a short bob in emulation of a hairstyle favored by ancient Roman republicans.

The Museum is fortunate to have this fine example of an English Quaker school sampler; American Quaker samplers are more numerous. Eliza Dymond Hull worked this sampler when she was nine years old. Eliza’s given name was Elizabeth and she was a fifth generation Quaker living in Uxbridge. She married John Fell from London in 1816 and died, perhaps in childbirth, in 1819.
