Description

Set of nine silk damask panels. The panels have a large-scale floral panels in white on a pink-tan ground. The design is repeated twice in the width of the fabric and consists of two groups of leaves, flowers and fruit. In one group there is a pear and in the other an exotic fruit. Several different diapered patterns are used to shade the leaves and fruit. Tissue woven with a tabby ground and the pattern is bound in tabby with a separate binding warp. Two ground warp threads in tan silk. One binding warp thread in white silk. Découpure of 4. Approximately 152 group warp threads per inch. Cords in the design of approximately 415. Selvedges in plain tabby. The panels were originally sewn together to form the skirt of a dress. Set of nine silk damask panels, France, 1750-1800.
