Description

Middle East, Textile; Panel fragment, silk-embroidered cotton, design of octagon on black ground with corner border on two sides, Azerbaijan or NW Iran, 1675-1700 Plain weave cotton embroidered with silk in cross stitch. The design has been dyed onto the ground using a resist and indigo. Black ground with part of a large red medallion outlined in white containing stylised plants and leaves within an irregular octagon, all edged in black; one leaf has been left incomplete. The border has a red ground with Z-motifs in blue or yellow edged in black. There is an area where the black cross stitch has been replaced with surface darning [probably a repair]; this may indicate that surface darning is a later technique. Embroidery threads: 2S silk; black, white, yellow, blue, red, green and light brown.
