Description

Embroidered gift cover (fukusa) of buff coloured silk woven with a design of small flowers and embroidered with silver thread and silk cords in couched and raised work with some coloured silk embroidery in satin and long and short stitches. The design consists of a dragon coiled amongst clouds. There is a border all around of buff coloured silk woven with small dragons and flowers in yellow and light-grey. The fukusa is backed with buff silk and has an inner lining of blue and white cotton. Embroidered gift cover (fukusa), Japan, first half of 19th century
