Description

Silk dress fabric with a brown ground and coloured floral sprays. The pattern has a vertical emphasis cut across by diagonal trails of flowers. The fabric is brocaded in bright coloured silks in shades of blue, beige, pink, maroon and green. The ground is satin and a flush pattern serves to outline the brocaded pattern. The piece has a narrow selvedge of five cords on the right side, and a repeat of 19.5" (52cm). The back of the silk has a starch dressing. Silk dress fabric, possibly Germany, possibly Netherlands, 1750-1760.
