Description

Woman’s petticoat of pink silk satin, lined with undyed glazed worsted and wadded with a thin layer of wool. It is quilted in running stitch with pink silk thread in a horizontal pattern of swags, flowers, bows and tassels around the hem, with tiers of ogee arches above. The petticoat is made of six panels of silk with pocket openings in the side seams bound with 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide pink silk ribbon. The same ribbon binds the hem. There is a wide box pleat at centre front with side pleats and an inverted box pleat at centre back with side pleats. The waist is bound with ⅝-inch (1.6 cm) wide pink silk ribbonl The petticoat was altered in the late 19th century for a studio prop or fancy dress. The silk ribbon ties were cut off and replaced with linen ties, hooks and eyes. Woman's petticoat, 1750-1770, British; Pale pink silk satin, quilted with swags, ogee arches, altered 1870-1910
