Description

Pair of sleevebands for a woman's robe, silk satin embroidered with coloured silks and gold thread, China, Qing dynasty, possibly 1850-1861. Pair of sleevebands for a woman's robe. Design of birds and flowers arranged in a rectangle, embroidered with coloured silks and gold thread in satin, stem and seed stitches on white silk satin. Embroidered sleevebands such as this one were ornamental haberdashery, made to be sewn onto the sleeves of Chinese womens' robes or dresses during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Commonly-used ornamentation vary from generic Chinese landscapes to scenes from Chinese tales, or motifs of birds and flowers.
