Description

Middle East, Textile; Cover, silk satin with dense trellis pattern of flowers and birds, and silk brocade borders, signed Sadeq, Qajar Iran, dated 1201H, 1786-1787 Cover of woven silk satin with a border of woven silk and metal thread and a silk binding. Displayed behind glass. 8 shaft satin with pink silk warp and yellow, light blue and brown silk weft. Pieced pink ground with pairs of confronting birds forming a zigzag band. Small vertical upside down tulip heads link the zigzags to form a lattice. Within each compartment is a single flower. Along the top of the piece is a band of 16 small cartouches each enclosing the inscription 'Sadek' which is the name of the manufacturer and the date 121, probably an abbreviation for 1201AH [1787AD]. There is a pieced border along one side. It has a blue ground but the design is incomplete. There are pairs of serrated leaves in metal thread which seem to form an ogival lattice, only part of which is seen. It enclosed a linked arrangement of 5-petalled flowers around a green edge rosette. There is a red silk binding.
