Description

Orphrey of embroidered silk with gilt thread and coloured silks, Spain, 17th century Orphrey of embroidered silk with gilt thread and coloured silks in couched work and split stitch. Applied with embroidered figures. The orphrey consists of three oblong panels divided and edged by bands of gilt thread laid and couched over string in a rope-like pattern. Each panel contain the figure of a saint. Saint Peter is at the top, dressed in green and red and holds a key in his left hand and a book in his right. In the background is a palm tree, part of a castle and part of a circular domed structure. Saint Thomas is dressed in blue and pink, and holds a spear in his left hand and a book in his right. In the background is a domed church with a cross and pennant at the top and a cypress tree. Saint Andrew is on the bottom, and is dressed in red and blue and holds his cross of martyrdom. In the background is a tree with a gnarled trunk.
