Tiraz fragment woven in tapestry. Fine blue silk, paired warps, 18/cm.; olive green, white and salmon silk and gold-metallic (golded skin wound on white silk) wefts; design of large kufic script woven in gold thread and bordered with white and pink, olive green background.

This panel, carved from a single piece of ivory in a twice-repeating pattern, once adorned the side of a rectangular casket. The complexity of its decoration as well as the attention to details, such as the eyes of humans and animals, which were drilled and filled with minute quartz stones, demonstrate the refinement and the accomplishment of the caliphal ivory-carving workshop.

Weft:  blue and yellow silk.  Weft:  straight inner warp, yellow silk;  binding warps thin neutral bluish green silk.  Design:  symmetrical all-over pattern of stars, "palms"  and four petalled rosettes.  Worn and torn.  Selvedge on one side.
