Description

This richly patterned quilt is decorated with a mixture of real and imaginary flowers, with carnations, irises, tulips and lotus pods recognisable by their shape if not their colouring. Small birds inhabit the central medallion, while butterflies are incorporated into the crowded field design. The flowering trees that make up the main design spring from vestigial mounds at the edges of the field. Quilted chintz palampore with floral design, probably made on the Coromandel Coast, South-east India, ca. 1700-1725 A rectangular chintz palampore with all-over floral design. Central circular medallion filled with flowers. 8 tear-drop-shaped elements point inwards from the sides and corners of the field. Floral meander border. Red silk lining.
