Description

Doublet for an older boy or young man, c.1625, English; Black silk grosgrain, trimmed with black silk bobbin lace Doublet for an older boy or young man, of black silk grosgrain, interlined with linen and lined with black silk twill. It has a 2¼-inch (5.4 cm) collar, ½-inch (1.25 cm) deep shoulder wings, curving 2-piece sleeves, with a high waist and 8 laps below the waist. The belly pieces are made of pasteboard stitched between layers of linen and covered with the black silk twill. The doublet is decorated with ⅜-inch (8 mm) wide black silk bobbin lace, in parallel rows of 3, edging the seams and laps, under the armholes, on the fronts. A single row of lace covers the shoulder wings. There are 4 worked buttonholes on each sleeve, 24 on the left front and 4 button loops of braided black silk on the left collar. The buttons have a domed wooden core covered with black silk floss; only the core of 2 remain. Inside at the waist is a band of linen covered with black silk twill, with 12 metal eyes. There is a separate tab of black silk with a single metal eye at the inside waist of each front. The black silk is disintegrating and there are large areas where it is completely lost.
