Description

embroidered, 1600-1629, English Chalice veil of fine linen embroidered with red silk in double running, stem, braid and buttonhole stitch. In its centre is a rayed medallion containing the sacred monogram 'IHS', the cross and the sacred heart. In each corner is a winged angel's head. There is a border of 30 square compartments outlined by narrow bands of geometrical ornament, each filled with an emblem of an instrument of the Passion, there being 9 different motifs in total. The emblems represented are as follows: the Crown of Thorns and the Veil of St. Veronica (Sudarium); sword, halberd, lance, purse and lantern; pillar, handkerchief(?) and the cock; pincers, hammer and 3 nails; cross with sun and moon above; ladder, spear and sponge on reed; 4 scourges; a coat and 3 dice; a tomb, or the Ark of the Covenant. There are several holes and areas of wear in the centre of the field.
