Description

See also Textile Art (Autumn, 1981) page 64 Hitatare (two pieces), polychrome figured silk, Japan, Edo period, late 18th-early 19th century Matching jacket and trousers with a green and gold checkerboard design overlaid with roundels in white and blue. The ground weave is a 3/1 twill in green silk with extra weft patterning in flat gold, white and blue passing from selvedge to selvedge and bound in a 1/2 twill by an extra warp of natural-coloured silk. Both jacket and trousers are lined with plain weave cream silk.
