Description

Man's coat 1775-85, British; Tamboured white figured satin, British or French A man’s coat of figured white silk satin with a standing, 1¼-inch (3.2 cm) collar, 2-piece sleeves ending in cuffs, 3¾ inches (9.4 cm) deep. The fronts curve from neck to hem with pleats 3¾ inches (9.4 cm) deep, below the hip set beside the centre back. Each front has a pocket and scalloped pocket flap; the centre-back seam is open below the hip. The coat, sleeves and pocket flaps are lined with white silk satin, the pockets with bleached linen. The coat is tamboured with silk thread in shades of pink, blue and green in a pattern of flowers and love knots, on the collar, cuffs and pocket flaps, round the front neck, down the front edges and along the side pleats and centre back opening. There are 10 embroidered buttons along the right front edge, 3 on each cuff and 1 at the hem and top of the pleats. The coat fastens with 2 pairs of hooks and eyes, 1 below the collar and 1 at mid-chest. The coat was mended under the armholes, probably in the 18th century, with a crescent-shaped piece of the white figured silk on the outside and white silk twill on the lining, on each side.
