Description

Textile, fragments, woven silk, gold-wrapped thread brocade, Varanasi, ca. 1850 A sample of this fabric was included in John Forbes Watson's second series of 'The Textile Manufactures and Costumes of the People of India', published in 1873-77. Fragments of a length of woven silk, with a flower design brocaded with stripes of gold and coloured silk thread on red silk ground. The elaborate type of pattern shown here is called meenakari (enamelling).
