Lé avec 6 médaillons "Les tourterelles " destinés à être découpés puis appliqués en broderie sur le lé de fond ; retissage effectué à Lyon par la maison Tassinari et Chatel, dans le cadre de la restauration du billard de la Reine, achevée en 1993, grâce au mécénat de Lady Michelham.

Retissage d'après le " meuble " livré par Charton en 1779 pour le cabinet intérieur de Marie-Antoinette à Versailles puis adapté aux proportions du billard de la Reine en 1783.

Vernet is best known as an accomplished history painter, but like many academic artists of his day, including his teacher François -André Vincent, he also made caricatures. Among these were numerous drawings of friends and acquaintances as well as sketches of fellow Academicians during the meetings of the Institut de France. This wonderful wsh drawing most likely depicts the Romantic composer Charles-Henri Plantade. A lightly traced inscription in graphite at the bottom left appears to read "Plantade,"and the image resembles a more serious profile-portrait of Plantade, who clearly had a prominent nose, which Vernet increased considerably in size. It is a good-natured caricature that Vernet signed with a characteristic flourish at the bottom.

Ribbon; blue silk ground with design of roses, narcissi, and jonquils brocaded with brilliant green, reddish-orange, dark red, yellow, and white; somewhat worn from being tied in several places.

Bacchus enfant, couronné de pampres, est assis sur les genoux d'une nymphe derrière laquelle est debout Mercure et qu'entourent trois suivantes. A droite, perspective de jardin ; à gauche, sous-bois en forêt. Bordure à fleurs, fruits et oiseaux polychromes sur fond brun.
