Description

Woman's linen apron, 1630-60, Italian; embroidered with red silk, red & white silk fringe Woman’s apron pieced together from other worked linens. It has two panels, 30 inches (76 cm) wide, joined by a 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide insertion of needle lace. Around these is a 5-inch (12.5 cm) pieced border of double-sided embroidery with red silk in a mirror-imaged pattern of vases. Around this is 3¾-inch (9.5 cm) pieced border of plain linen. At the hem is a 3¼-inch (8.3 cm) border of needle lace. A red and white silk fringe edges the sides and two lengths of the fringe cover the waistband.
