Description

Dress fabric of brocaded silk, woven in Spitalfields, London, ca. 1740 Dress fabric of brocaded silk. Woven with a large-scale floral design in buff, blue, green and mauve on a buff ground. The ground has an all over cannellé design with an outline pattern in a lighter buff made by the ground weft. The flowers are shaded to give a three-dimensional effect both with points rentrées and tones of complimentary colours. There is one repeat of the design in the width of the fabric but no complete repeat in the length. The selvedges are woven in tabby with two green and two white stripes. A loom width, but worn.
