Description

Woman’s petticoat of blue silk satin, lined with undyed glazed worsted and wadded with a thin layer of wool. It is quilted in running stitch with blue silk thread in a narrow border of scrolls around the hem, underneath large diamonds filled and surrounded with leaves and flowers. The space above is filled with a 1½-inch (3.8 cm) diamond pattern. The petticoat is made of 4 panels of silk with one pocket opening in a side seams bound with ¾-inch (1.8 cm) wide blue silk ribbon. The hem is bound with a ¾-inch (1.8 cm) wide blue silk twill ribbon. The petticoat was altered in the late 19th century probably for fancy dress. The waist binding and ties were removed, the pleats released and a casing sewn around the waist. A blue silk fringe was added to the hem. Woman's petticoat, 1740-1770, British; Chinese blue silk satin, quilted with diamond pattern and flowers, altered 1870-1910
