Embroidered coverlets like this are often referred to as Chamba rumals, but were made at several places in the Punjab Hills, or the modern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, one of which may have been Chamba. They are typically decorated with scenes from the life of Krishna, especially the rasamandala, where he dances with all the gopis (cow-herd girls) at once, or his wedding to Rukmini, which is the event shown here. the other gods line up on the right of the coverlet to pay homage to Krishna. Embroidered Coverlet 'Rumal' depicting Krishna's marriage to Rukmini, Chamba, Punjab Hills, ca.1800. This decorative coverlet (rumal) made of cotton embroidered with silk depicts Krishna and his marriage to Rukmini. Krishna is shown at the top of the scene whilst Rukmini is being led into the wedding marquee 'mandapa' in the centre. The general composition represents a wedding celebration, containing processions of women playing instruments, various deities, animals and birds.
